Strange Wilderness

By Syeda Zehra

For all those who are adventurous, thrill seekers and nature lovers, a visit to University of Karachi (UoK) is a must once in a life time. Imagine thousands of acres of land with shrubs and greenery all over the place and strange animals. Creatures that are not only different by appearance but also have unexpectedly weird characteristics.
UoK is famous for squirrels, running all over the place. They live on giant trees. Observing them is a delightful experience. You may find them in the PG (Prem Gali) munching leftovers one moment and the other moment they are gone.
Early in the morning you might hear the sweet and unrecognizable chirping of birds that you have never seen or heard of. I once saw a bird that was somehow a cross between a dove and a crow by appearance.
There are cats that are slightly different from the ones found in the rest of the city. The reason is whether you shout at them, throw things at them or run; they will keep on staring at you or sometimes start following you, Pretty hard for those who have cat phobia (chuckles).
The most mysterious and hard to believe creature is found inside the ‘jungle’ behind the department of Mass Communication. A giant lizard referred as ‘a Komodo dragon’ by the students of the department is very famous.
The butterfly lovers should also visit the place because butterflies are not a rare sight in UoK along with various bugs. The recent monsoon rains have added thousands of frogs croaking all the way.
University of Karachi is indeed a place with diversity not only in academics but also in wild life.
